Meet the Artists

Jenna & Nejc

Jenna Applegarth

Jenna found swing dancing in 2004 in her small local scene of Wenatchee WA. Since then she has spent countless hours expanding her dancing repertoire and sharing her love and knowledge of these dances with others. Her energy and passion create the perfect environment for learning. Jenna has attended, coordinated, and taught various workshops and exchanges all across the globe. Some of her favorite highlights are performing at Benaroya Hall in The Jump Session Show and teaching for Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing. Above all else she believes that learning to dance should be fun, and rooted in the music and history. With over 15 years of teaching/coaching/training experience, she loves finding new ways to connect with other dancers on the floor and in the classroom and to create challenging yet applicable lessons in the classroom.

Focus Subjects: Lindy Hop, Balboa, St Louis Shag, Blues, Charleston, Solo Jazz, Collegiate Shag, Peabody, One Step, Swing Walk, Black Bottom, and more!

Nejc Zupan

Nejc started dancing swing back in 2003 as a result of his contemporary dance experience and a strong love for jazz music. Because of this he became the main culprit for the popularization of Lindy Hop, Blues and Balboa in Slovenia in the early 2000s. His swing dance experience is a collection of endless research into different dance forms, many international workshops and his humble eagerness to keep learning from anyone who is willing to teach him. In the past two decades he has taught all over Europe with some of the most talented teaching partners and supported new up and coming swing scenes in numerous countries. He is known for his elegance and smooth style of dancing as he pays special attention to jazz body movement, control and musicality, all quintessential to any swing dancing.

The Prohibition Stompers

The Prohibition Stompers project was launched in late 2016 in Graz, Austria, and comprises seven early jazz enthusiasts from different corners of the world.
Their choice of music brings us back to the era referred to as the golden age of jazz or the roaring 20s, a period marked by boundless optimism and endless possibilities. This time was characterised by a booming economy, as well as the first widespread use of automobiles, telephones, radios, and other electrical appliances. The media was focused on celebrities, including sports stars like Babe Ruth and movie stars like Charlie Chaplin. As a result, the first pop-culture emerged with all the energy and madness of the period contained in the music. People began to dance to a fast-paced, rhythmic style of music known as stomp. The band strives to revive the spirit of that era, filled with new energy.

Hot Brew

Hot Brew is a group of four young, Czech and Brazilian musicians, currently studying at the jazz academy in Linz.
Hot Brew focus on the big band music of Count Basie, Chick Webb, some Erskine Hawkins and a lot of Duke Ellington, with the emphasis on 30’s and 40’s.

The Mojo Peddlers

Introducing The Mojo Peddlers, a vibrant ensemble of six seasoned musicians who bring the soulful sounds of classic blues to life. With a lineup featuring sultry vocals, guitar, and bass that weave through melodies and rhythms, the heartbeat of the drums, the wailing harmonica, and the smooth saxophone, this band is a powerhouse of blues tradition.
Formed in the historic city of  Salzburg amidst the echoes of a world in pause, The Mojo Peddlers are a testament to the resilience of music.
Their repertoire spans the gritty tunes of  Muddy Waters to the iconic anthems of The Blues Brothers, ensuring that every performance is not just a show, but a journey through the rich tapestry of blues history.
Come, feel the mojo and let the good times roll!

DJ Yeamon Kemp

Born in Spain, Marcos Solana (a.k.a. Yeamon Kemp) has been living in Austria for 10 years. Jazz fan since his teenage years and Lindy Hop dancer, he is often seen on the decks playing music both in the local scenes of Salzburg and Linz, and at international swing festivals such as Winter Black Swing Festival (Spain), Jive Swing (Croatia) or Shake the Change (Slovenia). Besides the essential Big-Band and Kansas City sounds, his sets often contain tracks that go as far as Hard Bop, trying to encourage the dancers’ creativity. From Goodman, Ellington and Basie to Garland or Mobley, every song must have a special groove – along with lots and lots of swing.

DJane Sugarfoot julie

Sugarfoot Julie is usually spinning the decks in Graz. She loves to cater swinging tunes to dancers and is known for throwing in some very special songs here and there.

DJ Mark Brooks

Mark Becke a.k.a. DJ Mark Brooks is always on the quest for these very special Swinging Sounds, making the dancers smile and move their feet so easily over the dancefloor.
As DJ and Lindy and Shag dancer for more than 10 years now, he loves to play not only the classic Swing and Jazz sounds, but digs even deeper for more danceable pieces in genres from Jug Band street music over to Western Swing and gems from the Rhythm’n’Soul era of the 1950s and 60s.
He DJs and organizes regular Swing dance events in Regensburg (Germany) since 2013, and is one of the initial founders the local Swing dance scene and of the Swing in Regensburg association.

You have been dancing Lindy Hop for a while. You feel comfortable dancing with partners of different levels and are a regular on the social dance floor.

Yeah, it mostly works fine when I lead/follow it.

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
I am aware of the concept of Musicality and have managed to be musical, but it doesn’t always work and not with every partner.

How’s your Connection?
I know that every partner is different and I try to adapt my connection to the person I am dancing with, but it can be still challenging.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
I feel fairly confident with mid-range tempos, but at slow or fast tempos it is hard to keep the rhythm and maintain a good connection.

Lindy Hop is a part your life. You are a regular on the social dance floor and don’t just participate in classes and/or workshops, but work on the topics you encounter there on your own as well.

What kind would you like me to do?

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
Musicality is a great way to use my latest footwork variation and improvise a little.

How’s your Connection?
I try to be a comfortable Lead/Follow, but sometimes it’s hard to find the right connection if my partner doesn’t match my effort.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
I feel fairly confident with mid-range tempos, slower and faster music, but with really slow or fast music I have to make a choice between doing what I know myself capable of and a good connection to my partner.

Classes, Workshops, Socials, Privates you’ve done them all. You practice alone and with partners. You integrate parts of other dances into your Lindy Hop, Improvisation is an integral part of your dance, and you have an individual style.

The basics are always something to work on and refine.

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
If you don’t dance to the music, why dance at all? Some is sound, some is movement, but it’s all Jazz.

How’s your Connection?
I love how finding the right connection with a new partner can make every dance special and inspire in different ways. There is magic in the playful interaction with another dancer.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
It’s less about the tempo and more about the groove. If you feel the music, it will move you.
