Meet the Artists

Jenna & Nejc

Jenna Applegarth

Jenna found swing dancing in 2004 in her small local scene of Wenatchee WA. Since then she has spent countless hours expanding her dancing repertoire and sharing her love and knowledge of these dances with others. Her energy and passion create the perfect environment for learning. Jenna has attended, coordinated, and taught various workshops and exchanges all across the globe. Some of her favorite highlights are performing at Benaroya Hall in The Jump Session Show and teaching for Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing. Above all else she believes that learning to dance should be fun, and rooted in the music and history. With over 15 years of teaching/coaching/training experience, she loves finding new ways to connect with other dancers on the floor and in the classroom and to create challenging yet applicable lessons in the classroom.

Focus Subjects: Lindy Hop, Balboa, St Louis Shag, Blues, Charleston, Solo Jazz, Collegiate Shag, Peabody, One Step, Swing Walk, Black Bottom, and more!

Nejc Zupan

Nejc started dancing swing back in 2003 as a result of his contemporary dance experience and a strong love for jazz music. Because of this he became the main culprit for the popularization of Lindy Hop, Blues and Balboa in Slovenia in the early 2000s. His swing dance experience is a collection of endless research into different dance forms, many international workshops and his humble eagerness to keep learning from anyone who is willing to teach him. In the past two decades he has taught all over Europe with some of the most talented teaching partners and supported new up and coming swing scenes in numerous countries. He is known for his elegance and smooth style of dancing as he pays special attention to jazz body movement, control and musicality, all quintessential to any swing dancing.

Moe & Vincenzo

Moe Sakan

Moe Sakan has had professional training in many types of dance, including jazz, ballet, tap and contemporary dance. In 1999 Moe fell in love with the world of Swing dance, since then this has been her dances of choice. A pearl of the Orient, Moe moved to London in 2000, bringing a sparkle to the local swing dancing scene, and soon became the UK’s top female swing dancer. An active social and competition dancer, she is proud to have won numerous competition titles including Miss Camp Hollywood 2016. In 2017, She has the honour of being inducted into the Camp Hollywood Hall Of Fame.

Moe travels the world extensively both for performing and teaching Lindy Hop, Balboa and Shag. She has also enjoyed dancing for several productions, including theatre, television and films. Well known as a vintage enthusiast, Moe is passionate about the music and fashion of the Swing era. Her dedication to the culture is also reflected in her attitude towards the dance, as she constantly endeavours to recreate an authentic style, and her passion certainly reflects the spirit of the dance as it was back in the day.

The Prohibition Stompers

The Prohibition Stompers project was launched in late 2016 in Graz, Austria, and comprises seven early jazz enthusiasts from different corners of the world.
Their choice of music brings us back to the era referred to as the golden age of jazz or the roaring 20s, a period marked by boundless optimism and endless possibilities. This time was characterised by a booming economy, as well as the first widespread use of automobiles, telephones, radios, and other electrical appliances. The media was focused on celebrities, including sports stars like Babe Ruth and movie stars like Charlie Chaplin. As a result, the first pop-culture emerged with all the energy and madness of the period contained in the music. People began to dance to a fast-paced, rhythmic style of music known as stomp. The band strives to revive the spirit of that era, filled with new energy.

Band No 2

There will be another band on Saturday. As soon as we have hashed out all the details we will let you know who it is.

DJ Yeamon Kemp

Born in Spain, Marcos Solana (a.k.a. Yeamon Kemp) has been living in Austria for 10 years. Jazz fan since his teenage years and Lindy Hop dancer, he is often seen on the decks playing music both in the local scenes of Salzburg and Linz, and at international swing festivals such as Winter Black Swing Festival (Spain), Jive Swing (Croatia) or Shake the Change (Slovenia). Besides the essential Big-Band and Kansas City sounds, his sets often contain tracks that go as far as Hard Bop, trying to encourage the dancers’ creativity. From Goodman, Ellington and Basie to Garland or Mobley, every song must have a special groove – along with lots and lots of swing.

Levels

Intermediate

You have been dancing Lindy Hop for a while. You feel comfortable dancing with partners of different levels and are a regular on the social dance floor.

Swingout?
Yeah, it mostly works fine when I lead/follow it.

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
I am aware of the concept of Musicality and have managed to be musical, but it doesn’t always work and not with every partner.

How’s your Connection?
I know that every partner is different and I try to adapt my connection to the person I am dancing with, but it can be still challenging.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
I feel fairly confident with mid-range tempos, but at slow or fast tempos it is hard to keep the rhythm and maintain a good connection.

Intermediate-Advanced

Lindy Hop is a part your life. You are a regular on the social dance floor and don’t just participate in classes and/or workshops, but work on the topics you encounter there on your own as well.

Swingout?
What kind would you like me to do?

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
Musicality is a great way to use my latest footwork variation and improvise a little.

How’s your Connection?
I try to be a comfortable Lead/Follow, but sometimes it’s hard to find the right connection if my partner doesn’t match my effort.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
I feel fairly confident with mid-range tempos, slower and faster music, but with really slow or fast music I have to make a choice between doing what I know myself capable of and a good connection to my partner.

Advanced

Classes, Workshops, Socials, Privates you’ve done them all. You practice alone and with partners. You integrate parts of other dances into your Lindy Hop, Improvisation is an integral part of your dance, and you have an individual style.

Swingout?
The basics are always something to work on and refine.

Dancing to the music instead of using it as a metronome?
If you don’t dance to the music, why dance at all? Some is sound, some is movement, but it’s all Jazz.

How’s your Connection?
I love how finding the right connection with a new partner can make every dance special and inspire in different ways. There is magic in the playful interaction with another dancer.

How are you doing with different Tempos?
It’s less about the tempo and more about the groove. If you feel the music, it will move you.
